چکیده

The Hamiltonian-Krein (instability) index is concerned with determining the number of eigenvalues with positive real part for the Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem JLu = λu, where J is skewsymmetric and L is self-adjoint. If J has a bounded inverse the index is well-established, and it is given by the number of negative eigenvalues of the operator L constrained to act on some finite-codimensional subspace. There is an important class of problems namely, those of KdV-type for which J does not have a bounded inverse. In this paper we overcome this difficulty and derive the index for eigenvalue problems of KdV-type. We use the index to discuss the spectral stability of homoclinic traveling waves for KdV-like problems and BBM-type problems.

On the spectral and orbital stability of spatially periodic stationary solutions of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations

In this paper we generalize previous work on the spectral and orbital stability of waves for infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems to include those cases for which the skewsymmetric operator J is singular. We assume that J restricted to the orthogonal complement of its kernel has a bounded inverse. With this assumption and some further genericity conditions we (a) derive an unstable eigenval...

Stability indices for constrained self-adjoint operators

A wide class of problems in the study of the spectral and orbital stability of dispersive waves in Hamiltonian systems can be reduced to understanding the so-called “energy spectrum,” that is the spectrum of the second variation of the Hamiltonian evaluated at the wave shape, which is constrained to act on a closed subspace of the underlying Hilbert space. We present a substantially simplified ...

Graphical Krein Signature Theory and Evans-Krein Functions

Two concepts, evidently very different in nature, have proved to be useful in analytical and numerical studies of spectral stability in nonlinear wave theory: (i) the Krein signature of an eigenvalue, a quantity usually defined in terms of the relative orientation of certain subspaces that is capable of detecting the structural instability of imaginary eigenvalues and, hence, their potential fo...

Eigenvalue Problems of Atkinson, Feller and Krein, and Their Mutual Relationship

It is shown that every regular Krein-Feller eigenvalue problem can be transformed to a semidefinite Sturm-Liouville problem introduced by Atkinson. This makes it possible to transfer results between the corresponding theories. In particular, Prüfer angle methods become available for Krein-Feller problems.
